THE forgotten war crimes of the 20th century are legion, but few matched in scale and brutality the atrocities committed by the Japanese Army in 1937 in the Chinese city of Nanking (now Nanjing). Perhaps as many as 300,000 civilians were slaughtered during six weeks of massacres, and up to 80,000 women raped. Yet after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as Japan was slowly rehabilitated by the West as a bastion against Communist China, the victims of Nanking were largely ignored by history until their suffering was brought to light in the late 1990s by a young Chinese American scholar, Iris Chang.

いささか古くなったが、Nicholas D. Kristofの今年初めの文章も興味深く参考になるかも。
この人は、日本にいた時には、日本に対してのシビアな見方で有名だったそうだが、その後はそうは見えないというか、冷静な東アジア地区のエキスパートとして考えられているといった人だろうか。NYTimesの外交専門の記者。
